When we talk about the UK’s ‘top 1%’, it can be difficult to get a grip on what this means. Top One Percent Income UK – for example, not all people pay income tax, and those who do tend to have a much higher income than those who don’t. And it is important to remember that individuals’ circumstances change over a lifetime, so assessments of someone’s position based on a snapshot can be misleading.

But the data does suggest some broad patterns, for example, that the rich are disproportionately male and middle-aged. In addition, the top 1% is disproportionately London-based, with over half of its members living in the capital. The patterns become more pronounced when we zoom in, looking at the top 0.1% and the next 0.4%. Those at these levels are also disproportionately male, and they are a lot older than the rest of the population (see Figure 3).

What is more, as we move up the wealth ladder, it is becoming clear that the link between hard work, education, and pay might be weakening. This is reflected in the findings from our recent interviews with high-earners, which suggested that many thought they were no longer ‘rich’. For example, some in professions that were once seen as solidly middle-class, such as barristers and academics, now feel that they are being squeezed by technology and offshoring. This is a worrying trend, and it is worth examining in greater depth.
